The Northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland have heard the electoral bugle. The dates for the assembly elections in these three states have been made public by the Election Commission. Election day will be February 16 in Tripura and simultaneously on February 27 in Meghalaya and Nagaland.
Rajeev Kumar, the chief election commissioner, announced during a press conference on Wednesday that all three states would receive their results simultaneously on March 2. Here are 10 significant points regarding the assembly elections in these states.
1. In the assembly, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland each have 60 seats.
2. On March 12, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s term would come to an end. The terms of the Meghalaya and Tripura legislative assemblies expire on March 15 and March 22, respectively.
3. More than 62.80 lakh people are registered to vote in these three states, including 31.47 lakh women and 31,700 people with disabilities. More than 1.76 lakh people will vote in these elections in three states for the first time.
4. According to the Election Commission, there are more than 97 thousand candidates who are above 80 years old. For voters with disabilities and candidates, it also offers the option of voting from home.
5. The assembly elections will have more than 9000 polling places.
6. In all three states, there are now 2.28 lakh more registered voters.
7. On January 21, a notification for the Tripura elections will be released. January 30 is the deadline for nominations.
8. On January 31, notice will be given in Meghalaya and Nagaland. The deadline to submit nominations is February 7.
9. Candidates may withdraw their nominations in Tripura on February 2 and in Meghalaya and Nagaland on February 10.
10. On March 2, the outcomes of the assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya will all be announced at once.
