Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been summoned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters on Sunday, April 16, in connection with alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped excise policy. To ensure Kejriwal’s safety, over 1,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces, will be deployed outside the CBI headquarters, along with adequate barricades. Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested last month in the same case. The CBI is investigating allegations of bribes paid by liquor traders to obtain licenses, and the AAP has refuted the charges. It seems that the CBI has a strategy of calling in people for questioning on Sundays when the offices in the area remain closed. This was the case when Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was summoned last month in connection with the same excise policy case. Sisodia was questioned for eight hours before being taken into custody.According to a CBI spokesperson, irregularities were alleged to have been committed, including modifications in excise policy, extending undue favours to licensees, waiver/reduction in license fee, and extension of L-1 licence without approval. This statement was made after the FIR was filed on August 17, 2022.
According to the CBI charge sheet, the excise policy was allegedly designed to favor liquor traders and promote cartelisation and monopoly at the wholesale level. The charge sheet also accused the accused of accepting bribes and extending undue favors to licensees, modifying the excise policy, and waiving or reducing license fees without approval. The Delhi government has denied these allegations and has scrapped the excise policy.
