Union Home Minister Amit Shah has declared a zero tolerance policy against drugs, stating that India will be drug-free by 2047. He called on all states to have zero tolerance for drugs, irrespective of their government. Shah praised the multidimensional efforts of the Modi government, which have led to an increase of more than 100% in the seizure of narcotics and the NCB registering 181% more cases against those involved in drug business. The fight against drugs is already yielding results, with more than 6 lakh kg of drugs, worth more than Rs 7,000 crore, being destroyed across the country from June 2022 to February 2023, according to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) data. Shah emphasized the need for a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach in investigations, tracing the origin and final destination of drug consignments. He called on different societal groups, including religious, social, educational, and corporate institutions, to cooperate in the fight against narcotics, with mothers having a special role to play. Shah encouraged parents to report addiction in their wards, assuring them that their wards will not be punished but only sent to de-addiction centers to save their lives. A crackdown has also begun on the illicit cultivation of poppy, with almost 35,000 kg of illicit poppy and more than 80 kg of cannabis being destroyed by the NCB in the past three years.
