The CCTV footage captured the dramatic moment when the buffaloes unintentionally fell through the pool cover, leading to the destruction of the structure. Andy and Lynette Smith, a retired couple who own the pool, shared their account of the incident with The Guardian.
They explained that eight of the buffaloes had fallen into their £70,000 pool, subsequently causing a stampede that resulted in damage to the surrounding fencing and flower beds. Fortunately, the buffaloes were later rescued, and no harm came to them during the ordeal.
The incident took place in July of the previous year when an electrical fencing system failed, allowing the herd to breach a wooden fence and hedge that separated their field from the Smiths’ garden. Andy Smith recounted the moment when his wife spotted the unexpected visitors while making morning tea.
Upon seeing the buffaloes in their pool, she immediately contacted emergency services but faced initial skepticism. “She called 999 and was told the fire brigade doesn’t accept hoax calls. It took some persuading to get them to take us seriously,” Mr. Smith said. Eventually, the authorities arrived at the scene, but one of the buffaloes, frightened by their reflective jackets, charged toward them.
A spokesperson from NFU Mutual Insurance confirmed that the claim for the damages had been settled and paid. The insurance company also expressed regret for the delay in processing the claim and the extended wait for an inspector’s visit, acknowledging that it fell short of their usual standards.
