Pro-Khalistani leader and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, who was on the run from the police, has been arrested in Punjab’s Moga district. In a video message shared before his arrest, Singh said that he never had any fear of arrest and would return among his followers once again. Singh also added that he had options to flee to other countries, but he chose not to as his followers and preachers were being “persecuted” by the state. Singh’s parents expressed their support for their son and said that they were proud of him for surrendering like a warrior. Agencies will focus on exposing his Pakistan ISI links after his arrest. Pro-Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh, who was absconding for weeks after Punjab Police launched a massive crackdown against him and his outfit, was arrested in Punjab’s Moga district on Sunday.
Earlier, he escaped the police dragnet twice — first on March 18 in Jalandhar district by switching vehicles and then again on March 28 in Hoshiarpur when he returned to Punjab along with his key associate Papalpreet Singh. It is important to note that the arrest of Amritpal Singh is a significant development in the ongoing crackdown against pro-Khalistani elements in India. His repeated attempts to evade arrest and his association with Papalpreet Singh, who is also wanted by the police, indicates the severity of the situation. It remains to be seen how this arrest will impact the ongoing pro-Khalistani protests and the larger Khalistan movement in India.
