India hosted the 100th meeting of the G20 on April 18, 2023. India’s G20 presidency began on December 1, 2022, and it will continue until November 30, 2023. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India has hosted 100 G-20 meetings in 41 cities, covering 28 states and union territories of India, and has received immense support from G20 members and guest countries for its inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and decisive agenda. India’s G20 presidency has included the participation of more than 12,300 delegates from over 110 nationalities, and it is among the largest in-person participations ever. India has been holding G20-related meetings in approximately 60 cities across India, the widest geographical spread in any presidency of the grouping.
The G20 is an international forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. These countries include both developed and developing countries and represent around 80% of the world’s economic output, two-thirds of the global population, and 75% of international trade. The G20 was created in 1999 to facilitate international economic cooperation and decision-making on economic issues, and it has become an important forum for global economic governance. It is commendable that India is taking steps to ensure that the voice and concerns of the Global South and developing countries are being heard during its presidency. This shows a commitment to inclusivity and equity in global governance. The record high-level in-person participation from all delegations, including ministerial-level dignitaries, is also a positive sign of engagement and collaboration among member countries. It will be interesting to see what concrete actions and outcomes emerge from these meetings in terms of addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.
