West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed regret on Tuesday over her party’s decision to support the passage of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), saying that it was a big mistake. She stated that the Centre has been taking away all the money since the implementation of GST and that they had frozen all the central funds. Banerjee made these comments during a programme to launch the Pathashree-Rastashree project, which aims to repair and construct more than 12,000km of rural roads in the next five months across 30,000 villages in 22 districts.
The upcoming panchayat election in the state is seen as a litmus test for all political parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha poll. Banerjee has announced that she would hold a sit-in demonstration from March 29 noon to March 30 evening, demanding the release of central funds for various welfare schemes. The TMC had supported the introduction of the GST when it was launched on July 1, 2017.
TMC (Trinamool Congress) party’s alleged disconnect with the general public. The speaker, Samik Bhattacharya, who is a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) spokesperson, suggests that the TMC has nothing to offer to the people, which is why they are making such statements. He further alleges that the TMC leader mentioned in the statement is a beneficiary of the GST (Goods and Services Tax), which could imply corruption or unfair financial gain. However, it is essential to note that these are political allegations and should be viewed with a critical lens, considering the context and possible motives behind the statement.
