The Education Minister of West Bengal, Bratya Basu, has criticized Governor CV Ananda Bose for his recent unscheduled visits to state universities, equating them to a “white elephant moving around.” The Minister stated that the two sides had earlier agreed to work together, but he could not comprehend why the Governor was making such visits without keeping the state government in the loop. Basu called upon Bose to either sign a bill that would make the Chief Minister the chancellor of state-run universities or send it back to the assembly secretariat.
Ties between the Governor and the West Bengal government had been largely cordial so far.The education minister, Bratya Basu, called upon Governor CV Ananda Bose to either sign a bill or send it back to the assembly secretariat so that it could be passed for the second time, evaluating the draft again if required. The statement assumes significance as after a meeting between the two sides in late February, the minister had hinted that the government would not stick to its demand to make the Chief Minister the chancellor if the governor and the state government were on the same page on various academic management issues. The bill passed in the state assembly to make the chief minister the chancellor has been pending with Raj Bhavan since the tenure of Mr Bose’s predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar.
