Ukraine’s biggest megacity of Kharkiv and the southeastern megacity of Zaporizhzhia have been targeted in a surge of Russian bullet attacks, according to officers. At least 17 Russian dumdums hit Zaporizhzhya in one hour on Friday morning, its acting mayor, Anatolii Kurtiev, said on Telegram, adding that the dumdums targeted energy structures. Russian forces struck critical structures in Kharkiv and launched multiple strikes on energy structures in Zaporizhzhya overnight; Ukrainian officers say a fresh Russian descent is under way.

The rearmost intelligence briefing on the situation in Ukraine from the UK’s Ministry of Defence suggests that “Russian forces have likely made political gains in two crucial sectors”, since 7 February. The report goes on to claim that “Russian units have likely suffered particularly heavy casualties around Vuhledar as inexperienced units have been committed” and suggests that “Russian colours probably fled and abandoned at least 30 substantially complete armoured vehicles in a single incident after a failed assault”. As the anniversary of Russia’s corruption approaches on February 24th, Kyiv has predicted an aggressive rush from Moscow aimed at engraving territorial earnings it can trumpet at the one-time mark, after months of little movement. “The occupiers hit a critical structure. There were about 10 explosions,” Kharkiv governor Oleh Synehubov said on Telegram.
”In some regions, there are power cuts, emergency services are on point”. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the 4 am strikes could disrupt power, heating and water inventories. Asked on Ukrainian TV if he agreed that the Russian descent had formally begun, Pavlo Krylenko, governor of the eastern Donetsk region, said on Thursday “Yes, surely”. Around eastern municipalities like Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Vuhledar that have witnessed some of the bloodiest battles of the war, “the adversary’s forces and means are rising there with diurnal intensity,” he said.
