Two local recruits of Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kreeri area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, according to police. The operation was launched following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in Wanigam village. The security forces recovered one AK rifle and a pistol from the encounter site. This was the second encounter in the last 24 hours, as the forces have been put on high alert due to intelligence inputs about a potential major terrorist attack in the coming days.
Yesterday, the police and army foiled an infiltration bid at the Line of Control in the Machil sector of the Kupwara district, killing two unidentified terrorists during the operation. The Army recovered two AK rifles and arms and ammunition from the encounter site.
In response to the threat perception, a high alert has been sounded in Jammu, with all army installations along the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway put on alert. Schools inside cantonment areas in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua were closed on Wednesday.
Jammu region has been increasingly on the radar of terrorists, and the threat is spreading to areas that were previously considered safe. Last month, five soldiers were killed in Poonch, and terrorists decamped with the weapons of the fallen soldiers. Despite a massive cordon and search operation, the attackers remain at large.
