The Congress party in Karnataka has called a meeting of its MLAs to decide who will be the chief minister following their victory in the state assembly elections. The Congress Legislative Party is expected to pass a resolution leaving the decision to the Congress national president. The meeting will not result in a final decision but will ascertain the views of all MLAs.
Both Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have expressed their aspirations for the top post, leading to concerns of an unpleasant standoff within the party if the matter is not resolved.
The scale of the Congress’ victory is a record in terms of both seats and vote share in over 30 years. The party has won 135 seats with a vote share of 42.88%, exceeding their expectations. The BJP won 66 seats with a 36% vote share, and Janata Dal-Secular won 19 seats with a vote share of 13.29%.
The Congress exceeded expectations, and the infighting among party leaders has gained traction in recent days. The Congress Legislative Party will meet today, and the decision will be left to the Congress national president.
