The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Army, has condemned the recent protests and attacks on army property and installations following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ISPR referred to the events as a “black chapter” in the country’s history and stated that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands. The statement cited the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) statement and law to justify Imran Khan’s arrest.
The ISPR condemned the protesters for attempting to manipulate the country’s sentiments for their own limited and selfish objectives. It stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and respecting the institutions of Pakistan. The military wing said that the army had shown extreme tolerance, patience, and restraint and had worked with utmost patience and endurance in the best interests of the country. The statement warned of “strong and decisive action” in the event of any further attacks on military and state installations.
The protests erupted across Pakistan, including at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the residence of the Corps Commander in Lahore. Protesters resorted to violence, and arson, and raised slogans against Imran Khan’s arrest. The protesting mob resorted to stone pelting on houses, offices, and vehicles, burning banners and tires, and blocking roads. Several videos on social media platforms show groups of men, some with their faces covered, entering the gated premises of GHQ with sticks, which they later used to hit the walls.
The Pakistan Daily reported that PTI workers were responsible for the attack and vandalism at the PAFMM Alam Air Base Mianwali. The ISPR condemned the protests and raised concerns regarding the tactics used by certain elements within the protesting groups. It warned of strict action against those involved in facilitating, planning, and political instigation.
The events following Imran Khan’s arrest have been a cause of concern for the stability of Pakistan. The ISPR’s statement highlights the importance of maintaining law and order and respecting the institutions of Pakistan. It is crucial that the situation is handled with caution and that peaceful means of resolving any issues are pursued. The Pakistani government must work towards ensuring stability and unity in the country.
