In a promising move for the sporting landscape of India, the interim Union Budget announced a substantial increase in allocations for the Sports Ministry. The total budget for the ministry now stands at ₹3,442.32 crore, marking a commendable rise of ₹45.36 crore compared to the previous fiscal year.
One significant aspect of this budget is the clear emphasis on the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11. The allocated funds are earmarked to elevate the country’s performance on the global stage during the 2024-25 financial year.
The flagship programme of the Sports Ministry, Khelo India, received a notable boost with an allocation of ₹900 crore. This marks a commendable increase of ₹20 crore from the previous budget, highlighting the government’s commitment to grassroots development and the nurturing of young sporting talent.
About Indian Sports:
The Sports Authority of India (SAI), responsible for organizing national camps, providing infrastructure, equipment, and appointing coaches, saw a significant increase in its budgetary allocation. With a rise of ₹26.83 crore, the allocation now stands higher than the previous year’s revised expenditure of ₹795.77 crore. This increased funding is expected to contribute to the enhancement of training facilities and support systems for athletes across various disciplines.
The National Sports Federations (NSFs) have reason to celebrate as well, with a ₹15 crore increase in their allocation compared to the revised budget of ₹325 crore in the previous financial year. This additional funding is crucial for the smooth functioning and development of various sports federations across the country.
The augmented budget for the Sports Ministry reflects a positive stride towards prioritizing sports in India. The targeted focus on the Paris Olympics, coupled with increased allocations for Khelo India, SAI, and NSFs, indicates a holistic approach to sports development. This financial commitment not only aims to enhance performance at the international level but also underscores the importance of sports in fostering a healthier and more active nation.
