Japan and South Korea’s seacoast guards were searching Wednesday for eight crew from a weight boat that sank between the two countries, after 14 others were saved. “An aggregate of 14 have been saved,” a spokesperson for the Japanese seacoast guard told AFP. ” We do not know their condition and ethnicities yet,” he added, declining to be named. A Japanese seacoast guard aeroplane and two vessels were at the scene, with fresh Japanese and South Korean vessels en route, officers from both countries said.
The boat’s captain used a satellite phone to tell South Korean seacoast guard officers that he and the crew would abandon the sinking boat in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Jeju Coast Guard said. The accident came as a cold snap hit much of Asia, with daytime temperatures in some of the Japanese islets nearest the deliverance point reaching just three degrees Celsius. The 651- ton Jin Tian is registered in Hong Kong, and the crew on board included 14 Chinese citizens and eight people from Myanmar, Japan’s seacoast guard said. In 2020, a weight boat with 43 crew and nearly 6000 cattle on board sank off southwestern Japan after being caught up in a typhoon. Two crew members survived.

The boat was fully submerged when the South Korean Coast Guard arrived at the scene, reported the Yonhap news agency. The seacoast guard didn’t find anyone on the first three life rafts and two lifeboats they searched.
