The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is collecting the voice samples of Jagdish Tytler, a senior Congress leader, in connection with the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Delhi in 1984. The CBI has found fresh evidence in the case, which makes it necessary to collect Tytler’s voice sample. The Congress leader is accused of inciting a mob that killed three people in the Pul Bangash area of the national capital.
Tytler has denied the charges against him, and the CBI had given him a clean chit three times earlier. The Nanavati Commission also named Tytler in its report on the anti-Sikh riots. It seems that Mr. Tytler, a Congress party member, faced criticism and opposition due to his presence at key party events. Despite this, he was included in the committee for the Delhi municipal election last year, which caused a lot of controversy. He was also supposed to join Rahul Gandhi’s foot march across India, but he did not participate, possibly to avoid further controversy. The BJP had in 2018 filed a complaint demanding Jagdish Tytler’s arrest after a Sikh organisation released a video, claiming it shows him saying “I killed 100 Sikhs”. It is worth noting that Jagdish Tytler has denied all allegations of involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and has never been convicted in any case related to the riots. However, he has faced severe criticism and protests from the Sikh community and opposition parties over his alleged involvement in the riots. The controversy surrounding Tytler’s alleged involvement in the riots remains a highly sensitive issue in Indian politics.
