The Indian Army is reviewing the implementation of the amended Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast. This comes after the Centre denied sanction to prosecute 30 army personnel allegedly involved in the botched operation in Nagaland in December 2021, in which 14 young men were killed. The Eastern Army Commander, Lt. Gen RP Kalita, said that they have analyzed the mistakes made in that operation, and amendments were already made on the SOPs for Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and upper Assam.
He also mentioned that they are monitoring the situation along the India-Myanmar border closely and that no part of Indian territory is being used by any of Myanmar’s rebel groups.According to Lt Gen RP Kalita, the Eastern Army Commander, the situation along the borders is stable, and any minor misunderstandings or emerging situations are being resolved through border talks by established protocols. Both sides have robust methods in place, and there is a lot of focus on stopping the migration of the border population. He also emphasized the importance of having vibrant border villages for the border areas.According to Lt. Gen RP Kalita, the focus of the Eastern Army is also on the India-Myanmar border. He mentioned that the troops, primarily the Assam rifles, are monitoring the situation very closely. He added that no part of Indian territory is being used by any of Myanmar’s rebel groups, and there have been a few cases of bombings near the border against rebel groups, and the situation is being constantly monitored.
