A heat wave warning has been issued for Delhi and nearby areas as the capital experienced scorching temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that four stations in Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius or higher, marking the first occurrence of such extreme temperatures this year.
Najafgarh, a locality in Delhi, recorded the highest maximum temperature on Sunday at 46.3 degrees Celsius. The IMD stated that when the actual maximum temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or more for two consecutive days, a heat wave is declared over the station according to their criteria.
The weather forecast for Monday predicts partly cloudy skies and heatwave conditions in isolated areas. The IMD also expects strong surface winds with speeds ranging from 25 to 35 kilometers per hour during the day. Relief from the intense heat is anticipated from May 24 onwards when a fresh western disturbance is likely to bring light rain and cloudy weather for three to four days.
On Saturday, the minimum temperature in Delhi settled at 23.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature reached 40.4 degrees Celsius. The rising temperatures, combined with the heatwave conditions, pose a significant risk to public health and safety, necessitating precautions and measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
During heatwaves, individuals must stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek shade or cooler environments whenever possible. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, are particularly susceptible to heat-related complications and should take extra precautions.
The authorities are expected to take measures to mitigate the impact of the heatwave and ensure the well-being of residents. These may include setting up cooling centers, distributing water and other essentials, and issuing public advisories to raise awareness about heat-related risks.
As the heat wave continues, individuals, communities, and authorities need to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. Adhering to preventive measures and seeking necessary assistance or medical attention in case of heat-related distress can help mitigate the potential health hazards associated with extreme temperatures.
