Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has warned the Australian team about the challenges posed by Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli ahead of the World Test Championship final against India at The Oval. Pujara, known for his resilience and ability to perform against the Australian bowling attack, could provide valuable insights to his teammates as he has played extensively in English conditions for Sussex in the County Championship. On the other hand, Kohli is in top form after his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he scored two centuries and six half-centuries for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Ponting emphasized the significance of Pujara and Kohli in the Indian team, stating, “The Australian team will be talking about Virat, no doubt about it, and they’ll be talking about Pujara. They’re the two.” Pujara has been a thorn in Australia’s side in the past, having scored more runs and centuries against them than any other team. His contribution will be crucial for India’s chances of winning the WTC trophy in their second attempt.
With Pujara batting at No. 3, he has scored 2,033 runs and five centuries in 24 Tests against Australia. Captain Rohit Sharma will rely on Pujara to make vital contributions in the WTC final.
Ponting also highlighted Kohli’s form, mentioning his outstanding innings of 186 against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in March. Kohli’s recent performances in the IPL indicate that he is back to his best, which could pose a significant threat to the Australian team. Ponting described it as an “ominous warning” for Australia heading into the one-off Test.
The former Australian captain also praised young Indian batsman Shubman Gill, who impressed in the IPL and made notable contributions in the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series. Ponting commended Gill’s talent, attitude, and stylish batting, particularly his front-foot pull shot against fast bowlers, which he believes will be valuable against the Australian attack.
Considering that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable due to injury, Ponting highlighted the importance of veteran Mohammed Shami in India’s bowling lineup. He believes Shami will have to elevate his game to another level against the strong Australian batting lineup, as his skillset and effectiveness are well-known to the Australian batters.
Ponting concluded by stating, “I think he [Shami] has to step up or try and take his game to another level if India is going to win this game.” He acknowledged Shami’s abilities with both the new and old ball and emphasized the need for him to deliver if India aims to emerge victorious in the WTC final.
As the highly anticipated clash approaches, both teams will be well aware of the key players who can turn the tide in their favor. The battle between Australia and India promises to be a thrilling encounter as they vie for the prestigious World Test Championship title.
