Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has claimed that the country’s military establishment plans to keep him in jail for the next decade on sedition charges. In a series of tweets, Khan said the plan was to humiliate him by imprisoning his wife, Bushra Begum, and using a sedition law to keep him behind bars.
The 70-year-old leader, who has been on bail in more than 100 cases, also alleged that the military establishment is deliberately unleashing terror on citizens and controlling the media to prevent a public reaction. Khan returned to his Lahore home on May 12 after locking himself in the Islamabad High Court premises for hours.
The IHC granted him bail, barring authorities from arresting him in all cases beyond May 9 and asking him to approach the Lahore High Court for further relief on May 15. His arrest by Pakistan Rangers last Tuesday triggered unrest that led to several deaths and damage to military and state installations.
Protesters broke barricades and entered the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and torched the corps commander’s house in Lahore. Police put the death count in violent clashes to 10, while Khan’s party claims 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing by security personnel.
