The suspense over the next Karnataka Chief Minister continues to linger as the Congress party deliberates on its decision despite receiving a clear mandate in the assembly polls. DK Shivakumar, the State Congress chief and one of the two contenders for the post, is heading to Delhi to present his case to the party’s national leadership. Meanwhile, senior leader Siddaramaiah, who is also vying for the chief ministerial berth, arrived in Delhi a day earlier before the final announcement.
Before departing for Delhi, Mr. Shivakumar expressed his gratitude to the Congress party, acknowledging that his current position is a result of its support. He stated, “Without the party, everyone is zero.” The party’s leadership, which includes Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Rahul Gandhi, was briefed by a team of observers on the opinions of the newly-elected Karnataka MLAs. A secret vote was conducted on Sunday, and the results have reportedly been presented to the party president, who will make the final decision.
Party sources have indicated that the name of the next Karnataka Chief Minister could be announced within the next 24 hours. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, DK Shivakumar emphasized that he will not resort to blackmail or rebellion, but he urged the party’s leadership to recognize his role in the emphatic win in Karnataka. He recounted a conversation with Sonia Gandhi, where she expressed confidence in his ability to deliver Karnataka. Mr. Shivakumar requested the party to show basic courtesy and gratitude by acknowledging the key contributors to their victory.
Regarding Siddaramaiah’s claim of having the support of the MLAs, Shivakumar extended his wishes but did not engage in further comment. The Congress party secured 135 seats in the 224-member Karnataka assembly, effectively displacing their archrival BJP from their sole stronghold in the south.
Choosing the next chief minister poses a significant test for the party. Despite the deep divide between DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, Congress projected a united front during the election campaign. However, their supporters have often clashed publicly over the issue of the top post. Siddaramaiah is known for his mass appeal, popularity among various sections of society, and experience in leading a government for a full five-year term from 2013-18. On the other hand, Shivakumar is recognized for his strong organizational capabilities, resourcefulness, and troubleshooting role during challenging times. He also enjoys the backing of the influential Vokkaliga community, including seers and leaders.
As the Congress party reaches its decision, the political landscape in Karnataka eagerly awaits the announcement of the next Chief Minister, which will shape the state’s future direction under the party’s leadership.
