Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament building in a grand ceremony this morning, describing it not only as a complex but also as a symbol of the aspirations of the 1.4 billion people of India. The event saw the attendance of representatives from 25 political parties, while 20 opposition parties chose to boycott, alleging the sidelining of President Droupadi Murmu by the Prime Minister.
During the inauguration, PM Modi emphasized that as India progresses, the new parliament building will contribute to the progress of the world. He referred to the building as a testament to the dawn of a self-reliant India, symbolizing the country’s journey toward becoming a developed nation.
The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of the historic scepter ‘single’ that he installed in the new Lok Sabha chamber. He explained that the scepter was seen as a symbol of service and nationalism during the Chola empire. PM Modi expressed gratitude to the Adeenam saints who blessed the parliament and remarked on the fortunate restoration of the holy ‘single,’ which he believes will continue to inspire.
He emphasized that democracy and the constitution are the driving forces behind India’s progress, and the parliament serves as the best representative of these ideals. PM Modi also acknowledged the construction of the new parliament building, which employed 60,000 workers. A digital gallery dedicated to these workers has been created to honor their contributions.
The Prime Minister highlighted the coexistence of the old and the new in the design of the new parliament building. He emphasized that the need for the new building arose from the requirement to accommodate the increasing number of Members of Parliament. The new structure will enable 888 members to sit in the Lok Sabha, compared to the current provision of 543 members, while the Rajya Sabha will have space for 384 members. The Lok Sabha Chamber will also host joint sessions of both houses.
Following the ceremony, PM Modi walked into the new building amid chants of “Modi” and received a standing ovation, marking the second phase of the inauguration ceremony.
Overall, the inauguration of the new parliament building represents a significant milestone in India’s developmental journey and is seen as a symbol of the country’s progress and aspirations for a self-reliant and developed nation.
