A team of both Congress and Left Front MPs, who were on a visit to Tripura’s Bishalgarh to probe post-poll violence and meet affected families, was allegedly attacked by a mob. The team was on a two-day visit. The members of the administrative platoon included P.R. Natarajan, Ranjita Ranjan,A.A. Rahim, Abdul Khalique (Lok Sabha) and Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Vinay Viswam, and Elaram Karim (Rajya Sabha). According to Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Law & Order, Jyotishman Das Chowdhury, all members were safe and none of the eight- member team suffered any injuries in the attack in Sepahijala’s Nehal Chandranagar.
One person was detained in connection with the incident, he said. Many vehicles that were used by the fact-changing team were vandalised by unknown culprits, the AIG told news agency PTI. “A delegation of MPs, MLAs and original leaders of the Left parties and the Congress made an unscheduled visit to Nehalchandranagar in Bishalgarh moment. During their visit, sloganeering was done and their vehicles were attacked by some culprits. The police companion team responded snappily and saved members of the delegation safely. A police statement said the MPs accompanied by original MLAs and leaders while making an unscheduled visit to Nehal Chandra Nagar in Bishalgarh faced sloganeering. “The coexisting police companion team responded snappily and saved the delegation safely.
Elderly officers were at the spot. No injury to any person has been reported. Damage to 2-3 vehicles has been reported. One suspect has been detained. Raids are on to identify and arrest other culprits,” the police statement said. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh condemned the incident. “A delegation of Congress leaders was attacked by BJP mugs in Bishalgarh and Mohanpur in Tripura. Police accompanying the delegation did nothing. And hereafter BJP is having a palm rally there. Palm of party-patronised violence, “Mr Ramesh twittered. Congress and CPI.(M) leaders said the administration team, comprising four Lok Sabha MPs and three Rajya Sabha MPs divided into three groups, is visiting violence-hit townlets and civic areas in three sections-West Tripura, Sepahijala and Gomati.
