Rescue operations have resumed at the site of a massive avalanche that hit the 15th Mile on Jawaharlal Nehru road connecting Gangtok with Nathu La in East Sikkim on Tuesday. Seven tourists, including a minor girl, were killed in the avalanche, and several others are still trapped under the snow. The search and rescue operation was called off on Tuesday evening due to inclement weather conditions, but officials have resumed their efforts. The Border Roads Organisation, Army, State Disaster Management Team, and police are engaged in the search and rescue operation. Thirteen people were injured in the avalanche, and among the seven deceased, three were Nepal nationals, two were from Uttar Pradesh, and two were from West Bengal. The Collector said that ex-gratia payments would be given to the Indian victims, and for the Nepal victims, the Home Department would take a decision. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and said that he was distressed by the mishap. It’s good to hear that the State Disaster Relief Force and NDRF are actively involved in the rescue operations. Let’s hope that the weather conditions improve and the rescue teams are able to carry out the operations successfully.
It is unfortunate to hear about the loss of life and injuries caused by the avalanche in Sikkim. It is good to know that rescue operations have resumed and that efforts are being made to assist those affected by the disaster. The decision to provide ex-gratia to the victims as per norms for the Indian victims and to have the Home Department decide for the Nepal victims is understandable. It is also positive news that seven people with minor injuries have been discharged from the hospital, and we hope for the speedy recovery of those still admitted.
