Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the Union government for using the slogan “mother of democracy” on G20 publicity hoardings in India. Speaking at a seminar organized by the Madhya Pradesh unit of the All India Professional Congress, Tharoor accused the BJP government of treating Parliament as a “rubber stamp or notice board” and getting bills passed without discussion with the opposition. He also claimed that the BJP government was trying to run the country on the basis of religion and that the Congress wanted all the basic principles of the Constitution to be followed in the country.
According to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, after India gained independence, leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Hindu Mahasabha had advocated for India to become a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nation) and criticized the Constitution as being based on “English thinking.” Tharoor alleges that the BJP government is attempting to run the country based on religion and that Congress advocates for following the basic principles of the Constitution in the country. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has stated that while some individuals and groups are advocating for India to become a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nation) and limiting the rights of non-Hindus, the Congress party believes in upholding the basic principles of the Indian Constitution. Tharoor’s comments were made in the context of a seminar on “Conserving the Constitution and Uplifting the Constitution,” organized by the Madhya Pradesh unit of the All India Professional Congress (AIPC). Tharoor is the chairman of the Congress-affiliated AIPC.
