Former chief selector MSK Prasad has advised against India picking they’re playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final with a predetermined mindset, referencing their previous experience two years ago. Prasad emphasized the importance of assessing the conditions at The Oval before making a final decision on the team composition for the final against Australia, which is scheduled to take place on June 7.
In the 2021 WTC final against New Zealand, India’s decision to play two spinners backfired as the Pacers dominated the game in overcast conditions. Prasad acknowledged that spin could play a role in the upcoming final but urged the team to make the final call based on the conditions prevailing at that time.
The absence of Rishabh Pant, who has been instrumental with his overseas performances, poses a challenge for India. Prasad noted that KS Bharat is the logical choice to replace Pant but highlighted the difficulty in filling Pant’s shoes as his batting record in England, Australia, and South Africa is unparalleled among Indian wicketkeeper-batsmen. Prasad emphasized the need for a fit wicketkeeper who can last for 100 overs in a Test match, considering the demands of the format.
The performance of India’s top-order batsmen, comprising Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli, against the Australian pace attack will play a decisive role in the outcome of the final, according to Prasad. With Gill in excellent form, Rohit having a century in England, Kohli’s consistent performances, and Pujara’s runs in county cricket, the top order is expected to deliver, supported by Ajinkya Rahane’s experience at number five.
Prasad expressed confidence in Gill’s ability to adapt to different formats, citing his recent success across all formats, including the Indian Premier League. He emphasized that a player who can adjust their mindset to different formats is likely to perform well in any format of the game.
Choosing between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, if India opts for four pacers, presents a difficult decision for the team management. Prasad acknowledged Jadeja’s recent performances, stating that he could play as a specialist batsman. However, considering Ashwin’s impressive record of over 400 Test wickets and his ability to bowl on any surface, Prasad noted that it would be tough to ignore him if the situation demands.
The selection dilemma also extends to choosing between Umesh Yadav and all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Prasad highlighted the tricky nature of this decision, considering Umesh’s better record in home conditions and Shardul’s batting advantage, which adds depth to the lower order, essential against a quality attack like Australia’s.
With the WTC final fast approaching, the Indian team management will carefully consider the conditions and available options before finalizing their playing XI. The aim is to field a balanced team that can handle the challenges posed by the Australian side and emerges victorious in the ultimate showdown of the Test championship.
