In the Indian Premier League 2023, Shubman Gill, the opening batter for the Gujarat Titans, continued his excellent form by scoring his second consecutive century on Sunday. Gill’s outstanding performance helped the Titans secure another victory in the tournament. However, the result also meant that Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were eliminated from the competition.
While wins and losses are a part of sports, a section of fans responded poorly to RCB’s loss and resorted to abusing Gill on social media. Unfortunately, even Gill’s sister, Shahneel, became a target for some fans, particularly of her Instagram post following the match.
Shahneel posted a few pictures from the match and wrote, “What a wholesome day.” However, many fans left hateful comments directed at both Shahneel and Shubman. Despite this negative reaction, it is important to note that there was no animosity between Gill and Kohli due to the match’s outcome. In fact, after the game, Kohli was seen acknowledging Gill’s remarkable innings with a hug.
Speaking about his performance, Gill expressed his satisfaction with his current form, emphasizing the importance of converting good starts into big scores. He mentioned that in the first half of the IPL, he was often falling short of reaching three-figure marks, settling for scores in the 40s and 50s.
However, he is glad that things are now working out for him in the latter stages of the tournament. Gill emphasized the need to maintain an aggressive approach in T20 cricket, while also applying oneself and maintaining self-belief.
The Gujarat Titans’ captain, Hardik Pandya, praised both Gill and Kohli during the post-match presentation ceremony. He highlighted Gill’s ability to play authentic cricket shots and bat like a seasoned player, which makes him a unique talent.
Pandya commended Gill’s shot selection and placement, making it challenging for bowlers to find any weaknesses. He also acknowledged the confidence that other batters derive from Gill’s performances. Pandya admitted that the Titans didn’t bowl well in the match and credited Virat Kohli for his excellent batting display.
With this victory, the defending champions, the Gujarat Titans, have secured a place in Qualifier 1 against the Chennai Super Kings on May 23. They aim to secure a spot in the final scheduled for May 28.
