The Ministry of Finance has announced the launch of a special ₹75 coin to commemorate the inauguration of India’s new parliament building. The coin, which will be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, serves as a tribute to the country’s celebration of 75 years of independence.
One side of the coin will feature the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar, with the inscription “Satyamev Jayate” below it. The words “Bharat” in Devanagari script and “India” in English will be displayed on the left and right sides, respectively. The denomination value of 75, written in international numerals, will be placed below the Lion Capital, along with the rupee symbol.
On the other side of the coin, an image of the parliament complex will be depicted. The upper periphery will bear the words “Sansad Sankul” in the Devanagari script, while “Parliament Complex” will be inscribed in English on the lower periphery.
The circular coin will have a diameter of 44 millimeters and will feature 200 serrations along its edges. Weighing 35 grams, it will be composed of a four-part alloy consisting of 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc.
The new parliament building is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. While 25 political parties are expected to attend the ceremony, approximately 20 opposition parties have decided to boycott the event.
The Congress party, Aam Aadmi Party, Left parties, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party, among others, have announced their boycott, stating that a new building holds no value when they believe the “soul of democracy has been sucked out.”
Opposition parties have expressed their disapproval of Prime Minister Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new parliament building instead of President Droupadi Murmu.
In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has criticized the opposition’s decision to boycott the inauguration, labeling it a “blatant affront to democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation.”
The launch of the commemorative coin and the inauguration of the new parliament building holds significance as India celebrates 75 years of independence. The events aim to highlight the country’s progress and achievements while also symbolizing its commitment to democracy and governance.
