Visva Bharati University has issued an eviction notice to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, asking him to vacate the 13 decimals of land he has allegedly been occupying in an unauthorized manner by May 6 or within 15 days of the publication of the last order on April 19. The notice cited government of India advisories and CAG reports and stated that the university was in urgent need of getting control of encroachments and also submitting a report to the ministry. The notice added that Sen and all concerned persons were liable to be evicted from the said premises, if need be, by the use of such force as may be necessary. Sen has repeatedly denied the charge, stating that he has all the necessary documents to prove that his father bought the 13 decimals of land. Amartya Sen has repeatedly trashed the charge saying while the 1.25 acres of land had been leased by Visva Bharati to his father for a certain period the contentious 13 decimals were bought by his father and he has all the necessary documents to prove that. Amartya Sen has denied the allegations made by Visva Bharati University regarding the alleged unauthorized occupation of land. He has claimed that the 13 decimals of land in question were purchased by his father and he has all the necessary documents to prove it. Sen has also maintained that he is willing to engage in a legal battle to protect his rights. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
