Legendary Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram has shared his thoughts on the increasing number of injuries to fast bowlers in modern-day cricket. Akram believes that one of the main reasons behind this is the lack of a basic training regime, such as running. He suggested that fast bowlers should include running as a massive part of their workout routine and bowl as many deliveries as they can to stay in shape.
Akram expressed concern over the current crop of pacers who get injured after playing just two first-class games. He believes that their bodies are not used to such intense physical exertion. The former Pakistan captain revealed that he only started going to the gym in the final three years of his career, having played around 100-150 first-class games for Lancashire.
Akram advised the current pacers to focus on bowling more in the nets to remain match-fit. He suggested that they should bowl long spells for at least an hour, 2-3 days before a game. According to Akram, if pacers bowl just three overs, they cannot expect their muscles to remain ready for the game.
Moreover, Akram recommended that youngsters should focus on playing 4-day cricket in addition to T20 cricket and IPL. He said that playing 4-day cricket would increase their pace and enable them to bowl longer spells, thereby reducing the chances of injury.
India has been struggling with long-term injuries to pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar. Bumrah’s injury has been a major concern, as he will miss the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June, and his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup is still uncertain.
Akram emphasized the importance of a proper training regime, including running and long spells in the nets, for fast bowlers to avoid injuries and maintain their fitness levels.
