Pakistan President Arif Alvi has called on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan, his close aide, to publicly denounce the events that occurred on May 9. The president emphasized the need to prosecute those responsible for the attacks on government buildings and military sites that followed Khan’s arrest. While the PTI leadership, including Imran Khan, has condemned the attacks and called for a Supreme Court investigation, President Alvi believes that Khan should publicly denounce the events himself.
The violent protests erupted across Pakistan after Imran Khan’s arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The government responded by detaining thousands of PTI employees. However, Imran Khan was granted bail until June 8 by the Islamabad High Court in the cases registered against him.
The Pakistan Army declared May 9, 2023, as a “dark chapter” in history due to the attacks on military installations by PTI chief supporters. Army Chief General Asim Munir condemned the incidents as “planned and orchestrated tragic events” and vowed to never allow such actions to occur again. He emphasized the importance of respecting the country’s martyrs and their monuments and promised that those responsible for the attacks would be brought to justice.
The Punjab interim government also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the PTI to hand over the “terrorists” who attacked Army installations. The Punjab Caretaker Information Minister stated that around 30 to 40 terrorists, involved in the attacks, were believed to be present in Zaman Park. The presence of these individuals was confirmed through geo-fencing.
