The moments leading up to the tragic train collision in Balasore, Odisha, have come into focus through the Indian Railways’ system of tracking rail traffic. The railway yard layout diagram, which indicates the positioning of trains at an intersection, provides insights into the sequence of events that led to the accident. The collision resulted in the loss of at least 261 lives and left over 900 individuals injured.

According to government sources, the diagram reveals that the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express was approaching the “UP line,” while the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was crossing the “DN main” line. Coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed, subsequently colliding with a good train on the adjacent tracks. Some of the derailed coaches fell onto the “DN main” line.

The Bengaluru-Howrah train then rammed into the derailed coaches of the Coromandel Express. While initial reports indicate a direct collision between the Coromandel Express and the goods train, railway experts have raised questions about the possibility of the Coromandel Express hitting the goods train while it was on a “loop line.” Visual evidence shows the engine of the Coromandel Express resting atop the goods train, indicating a direct and forceful impact.

A “loop line” is a railway track that branches off from the mainline and then reconnects with it after covering some distance. These loop lines play a crucial role in managing heavy rail traffic by creating additional space for trains to pass or wait.

In the wake of the tragic incident, government sources have emphasized that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted, exploring all possible factors including mechanical errors, human errors, and the potential for sabotage.

The revelations from the railway yard layout diagram shed some light on the sequence of events leading up to the collision. However, a thorough investigation is essential to determine the precise causes and contributing factors behind the accident. The Indian Railways will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of passengers while working to prevent similar incidents in the future.
