Indian women’s cricket has gone through many changes in the recent past. There was a time when Indian women played matches wearing the jerseys of the male team members, but now women cricketers also need no introduction. In recent times, the Indian women’s team has proved its mettle in global tournaments.
Now BCCI has announced to conduct Women’s Premier League (WPL) in March, which will prove to be a game changer. Till now there was a T20 challenge between three women teams during IPL, in which limited women cricketers got a chance to play. But now with more players getting a chance to play in the full five-team tournament, women’s cricket will also change at the grassroots level.
Like IPL, foreign players along with Indian women will pave the way to learn and grow together. Indian women cricketers have also welcomed WPL wholeheartedly. Former Indian captain Mithali Raj tweeted, Record breaking start of the newly started WPL. We didn’t expect any less. We know this is going to change women’s cricket. The time to come will be very good.
Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur said, WPL is not a game changer but a revolution in Indian women’s cricket. Exciting times are ahead for Indian cricket.
Jemima Rodriguez said, this is a historic step. This is a game changing step. This will give a lot of strength to the talented women cricketers. I am waiting for the session to start.
Ahmedabad team will be Gujarat Giants
In WPL, the team from Ahmedabad will be known as Gujarat Giants. Adani Sportsline announced this on Wednesday. Apart from WPL, Adani Sportsline also owns Gulf Giants in ILT20 and Gujarat Giants team in Pro Kabaddi League.
Former India captain Mithali Raj has claimed that the Women’s IPL will be a game-changer for women’s cricket and the sport in general. The media rights for the Women’s IPL went to Viacom 18 for the next five years at a price of Rs. 951 Crores.
Former India cricket team captain Mithali Raj claimed that the inaugural women’s IPL will be a game-changer for women’s cricket and cricket in general after the announcement that Viacom 18 had won the media rights for the tournament on Monday.
“The Women’s IPL will be a game-changer for women’s cricket and cricket in general. This development represents a significant milestone in that regard. Looking forward to an outstanding tournament. @BCCI,@BCCIWomen,@JayShah Sir,” tweeted Mithali Raj.
BCCI is all set to launch the long-awaited women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) as a five-team tournament in March 2023. It has been reported that the women’s IPL will feature 20 league games with teams playing each other twice. The table toppers will earn a direct entry into the final, while the second and third-place teams will battle out in the Eliminator. Each team can have 18 players with a maximum of six from overseas.
